We recently took on this project in central London. The apartment was being refurbished and the owner wanted a design that would keep some of the traditional features. Unfortunately the doors had long been removed and the new mahogany doors he’d had made looked too new. Our solution was to darken and French polish the eight new doors to a rich mahogany colour to make them look more in keeping with the apartment.
You can see from the images just how light the door timber was. After preparing and staining the doors, we sealed and French polished them to a full shine (very high gloss, with lots of polish). This takes a while as the doors need going over many times with the polish, but the effect is fantastic. The doors where finally waxed down with bees wax and wire, which takes them to a very classy satin finish. This is known in the trade as a “West end shine”
