We show a lot of examples of handrails and furniture being French Polished from light to dark but here’s an example of a Sapele handrail polished from dark to light. The handrail was in a really poor state, with scratches, scuffs and paint all over. Years of grime had become ingrained and the colour was thick and dark. Our customer wanted a lighter, more organic look and feel to the handrail.
French polishing isn’t always about going dark and shinny and the work on this handrail is a great way to demonstrate this. We fully stripped the old dark finish from the timber and repaired the damage. Bleaching out the stained sections, we were able to take the timber back to it’s natural lighter colour. Using a combination of French Polish and natural Bees wax, we were able to achieve the required finish.
The end result is a fantastic match for the surrounding dark decor and really brings the handrail back to life. Using wax to finish the handrail means that it feels great to the touch but also that it’s very easy to maintain (simply apply more wax every six months to a year)
