If you have a dark brown sofa or other furniture, the best way to complement them is with mid-tone walls. Think warm golden yellow, soft medium blues , restful grayish-greens, creamy tans or soothing greys.

Here are a few more tips to keep in mind. Darker colors are better for covering wood stains. If your home has dark wood flooring, a similarly dark colored rug may be a wise investment. If you want your area rug to be the main focus of the room, choose a brighter color rug to go with softer, muted walls and furniture.
Don’t forget that gray is neutral: There are some color schemes that contain gray and beige together , but it is probably a good idea to base your palette on one or the other. A warm gray or greige might just be the perfect complement to the right beige .
