Use a mix of equal parts distilled white vinegar and extra-virgin olive oil. Use a soft cloth to rub the mixture with the wood’s grain and then wipe off with a clean cloth.
Vinegar makes an excellent wood cleaner because it won’t damage wood finish or warp wood like other products do. Cleaning with vinegar is a green alternative to the sometimes toxic and expensive cleaners offered at the store.
Fill a spray bottle with 2 cups water. Add 2 tbsp. Mist a lint-free cleaning rag with the spray. Rub the damp cloth over the unfinished wood , rubbing with the direction of the wood grain to prevent splintering. Let the wood air dry fully before staining .
Try mixing a weak solution of water and dish washing soap. Dip a soft cloth in the solution, wring it out and wipe the entire piece. You want a damp cloth, not a wet one. Don’t saturate the wood, and rinse your cloth often.
If you need a homemade cleaner that will get rid of everyday dust and dirt, use this recipe for your wood surfaces: 1 cup of water, 1/2 a cup of white vinegar, 2 teaspoons of mineral oil or coconut oil, 15 drops of lemon oil, an empty spray bottle and a microfiber cloth or soft cloth.
Dishwashing detergent. One bottle is enough. Any brand will do . I personally use Dawn Platinum Bleach Alternative or Dawn Ultra, just because some old wood is salvaged from old kitchens, and I’ve found that they’re really effective in removing grease and grime.
Mix a cup of white vinegar with a cup of water. This mild cleaning solution is perfect for everyday use on wooden cabinets . It won’t warp the wood or take off the finish. If you dislike cleaning with vinegar , you can use a light soap solution instead.
If a pigment or wiping stain (those that contain a varnish, lacquer or water-based binder) gets the wood too dark , try removing some of the color by wiping with the thinner for the stain or with lacquer thinner or acetone. These stains are much more difficult to lighten than dye stains .
Always keep the ratio one-part baking soda to two parts vinegar . The mixture will fizz and bubble, like your favorite middle school volcano science project.
General Care. To maintain the finish, mild dish soap or a damp cloth is recommended for cleaning up after spills, just as you would clean woodwork. Cleaners such as Pledge and Murphy’s Oil Soap are not recommended because they leave a dull residue on the finish.
Wood stain is designed to penetrate into the grain of the wood , not to remain on the surface. If you happen to spread it too thickly, or you forget to wipe off excess, the material that remains on the surface will become sticky.
When using Water Based Pre- Stain Wood Conditioner, allow it to penetrate for 1-5 minutes, then remove any excess. Since Water Based Pre- Stain Wood Conditioner causes the wood fibers to swell, you will need to lightly sand the surface with a fine grade sandpaper 15-30 minutes after application.
