French Polishing and Bespoke Furniture
The best method I’ve found for deodorizing old wood furniture is to clean it with soft rags and common household ammonia cleaner (straight from the container or diluted half and half with warm water), and then rinse and air-dry it. Wear rubber gloves and work in a well-ventilated area to avoid inhaling ammonia fumes.
Bacteria and germs can permeate porous wood causing awful “ old – smell ” odors. To eliminate the smell , kill the bacteria and germs by cleaning the inside of the drawers and all surfaces with a sponge dampened with vinegar, Murphy’s Oil Wood Soap or any Anti-Fungal Detergents. Then let dry in a well ventilated area.
Try placing coffee grounds or charcoal in an open container inside of the drawers and close. Check back after a few days and replenish with new coffee or charcoal as needed. Similarly to charcoal filters, charcoal is a natural substance that may bring the musty smell out of your furniture .
An open container of baking soda or white vinegar, kept in an unobtrusive place (for example, on top of your kitchen cupboards), can help absorb musty smells and clear the air. Experts also recommend FreshWave or DampRid, two all-natural substances that absorb smells and trap excess moisture in the air.
Another simple but often effective wood cleaner used with success is a solution of one part olive oil to 24 parts white vinegar. This equates to two teaspoons of olive oil per pint of vinegar. Use the mixture from a spray bottle, and be sure to shake the bottle frequently.
Smelly dresser drawers can be caused by spills, substances transferred from clothing, bacteria, mold, mildew, fungi, insects and rodents. Bacteria and mold or mildew are the most common cause of odors. It’s easy to clean, disinfect and deodorize the drawers- stopping your odor problem once and for all.
White vinegar is a mildly acidic product that cleans, deodorizes, and disinfects. It can also kill 82% of mold species, including black mold , on porous and non-porous surfaces. You can use it safely on most surfaces, and its offensive odor goes away quickly. Pour undiluted white vinegar into a spray bottle.
Is musty smell dangerous ? A musty smell can be dangerous in as much as that it can be an indicator of mold growth in your home. Mold spores only need a surface to land on, excess moisture, air, and often warmth to thrive and cause mold growth. Mold can be toxic and hazardous to humans and pets.
White vinegar also has antibacterial properties, and it works really well to kill smells. To use it, put straight white vinegar—not white wine vinegar—in a spray bottle and mist the couch with it. As the vinegar dries, the smell will dissipate, but you should also spritz from about a foot away and try not to overdo it.
Even once you’ve killed the mould, the musty smell can linger and will stop your home from ever smelling fresh. Luckily, Febreze eliminates odours, rather than just covering them up. Use Febreze Fabric Refresher on your fabric sofa, curtains and your carpet, and those musty smells should be a thing of the past.
Sprinkle baking soda over affected areas: Baking soda absorbs odors and excess moisture. Sprinkle baking soda over the most affected areas and let it sit over night to absorb as much of the moisture and odor as possible. You can simply vacuum the baking soda the next day.
Dehumidifiers help reduce odors that can accompany mold and mildew in your home— getting rid of that “ musty ” or “rotting” smell . Running a dehumidifier helps reduce dust in your home, so you won’t have to clean as often. A dehumidifier also lowers energy costs because it helps your air conditioner run more efficiently.
Steps To Remove Musty Smell From Clothes : Add a cup of vinegar or a cup of baking soda to the wash to combat odors. Consider using a clothesline to dry your clothes outside to get a fresh outdoors scent. Use half a cup of pine-scented cleaner in the washer (the pine smell will be eliminated after a cycle in the dryer).
