Outdoor fabrics, such as Sunbrella®, are moisture, mildew and fade resistant. Generally, this means if you leave the cushions uncovered during a rainstorm, the rain will bead up and roll off. Should cushions be left out in the rain , as soon as it stops, shake or wipe off excess water and let them air out a bit.
The most important factor is that the shelter is cool and dry. It’s a good idea to protect them by placing your cushions in plastic storage bags. Now, you’re all ready to put them in your designated place and store them away for the winter .
Cover the cushions with clear plastic to keep them completely free of moisture. If the cushions came packaged inside a thick, clear plastic cover, you can leave it on, or you can buy plastic protective covers.
Your cushions may have accumulated a lot of dirt and dust over the summer that can settle into the fabric as stains. A vacuum with an upholstery attachment is very useful for getting dirt out of seams and zippers. You may also use a nylon scrub brush to remove stubborn debris.
During the off-season when we are not using our outdoor furniture daily, it can be a wise idea to protect it or store it for the winter. A good covering will keep moisture and debris off both the cushions and hard surfaces of your furniture .
How to Waterproof Patio Furniture Seat Cushions Clean all cushions if they are soiled. Let dry thoroughly. Place the chair cushions outdoors on a clean, flat surface and spray the front of the cushions . Hold the spray can at 6 to 8 inches from the surface of the cushions and spray with a steady, continuous stroke.
To cover or not to cover. Peters Billiards always recommends covering any outdoor furniture during winter months to keep them protected from dirt and debris. The cold will not hurt the cushions , but we recommend bringing cushions inside during winter months to keep critters out.
Cushions . Many of the models of outdoor furniture use removable cushions . When not in use in the winter they should be stored indoors, in a shed, or a heavy-duty cushion storage box. The fabric can be easily damage by the freezing and thawing that occurs during the cold weather.
If you stow them away for the winter while they’re still wet or even a little moist, a plastic storage bag will provide the perfect petri dish for fungal growth and upholstery damage. When you’re sure they are dry, seal your spotlessly clean, sweet-smelling outdoor cushions inside plastic bags.
