But overall, yes, in most cases, chalk paint is pretty user-friendly in that it really does require little prep. It will stick really well to your stuff. 😉 But use some common sense along with it. Time for a pretty furniture makeover break.
Chalk paint adheres to furniture beautifully without the use of primer and (usually) no sanding . A quick cleaning is typically all you need . With that being said, there’s very rarely a piece of furniture that goes through our shop that doesn’t need some type of prep work before paint .
To clean chalk painted surfaces, use a soft cloth slightly damp with water or Clean-A-Finish. Once the surface is clean, go over it with a dry, soft cloth and wipe up any wet spots. If the surface looks dull after cleaning, use Chalk -Tique Paste Wax to get back some luster.

Furniture doesn’t need to be sanded or primed. Chalk paint is easy to sand smooth once dry which makes eliminating any brush strokes easy so you can create a super smooth finish. Chalk paint is very durable when cured and when you add a wax or water-based polyurethane protective finish.
Rather than apply with a rag, you brush the cream wax on. It’s a thick, milky liquid that quickly dries, and then you buff it (just like with the paste wax) to work it into the painted furniture and bring out that delightful sheen . Cream wax is also easy to use and a little goes a long way.

What happens if you don’t wax chalk paint ? Chalk – painted furniture may not need sealing at all if it’s a piece that is rarely used, such as a sideboard in the corner of the room that holds champagne flutes and other items that you don’t necessarily use every day.
How Long Does Chalk Paint Last ? Chalk paint will last long -term if the right primer is used and a protective top-coat is applied. If the topcoat is wax, it will need to be rewaxed every 3 years or more depending on how much the piece is used.
However, General Finish’s High-Performance Top Coat in Flat (click here for the current price) was picked as the best chalk paint topcoat because it preserves the look, feel and color while increasing the durability of milk paint and chalk paint even with one coat .
Polyurethane. Polyurethane is a clear liquid oil-based topcoat. It is applied with a brush or is sprayed on, and typically provides the most durable finish, making it the best suited for high traffic, water-prone objects. Get a smooth polyurethane finish with these tips.
Prep and clean your furniture piece. Run your hand across the piece to find any rough patches that might need sanding (but you do NOT need to sand the entire piece when using Chalk Paint ® – – even if it’s varnished!). Remove any sticky gunk with soap and water or one of my favorite products, Goo Gone.
How many coats do I need? If you are painting something white or off white over a dark piece, you will probably need three coats for solid coverage. But because the paint dries really quickly, you don’t have a long wait in between coats . If you want your piece more distressed, you may be happy after only two coats .
